Place de la Comédie and the Opera
At the centre of Place de la Comédie, the Three Graces Fountain beats as the city’s heart. Locals meet beneath the gaze of these three young marble women, one eye on the Second Empire Opéra Comédie. Terraces stretch towards the plane-tree-lined Charles-de-Gaulle esplanade. A coffee shared here, in the Mediterranean light, sets a perfect scene.
The Écusson, medieval heart of the city
Behind the square, the Écusson unfolds a maze of paved lanes, small squares and Renaissance mansions. You push through doors to carved courtyards, you have a drink on Place Saint-Roch, you happily get lost on Rue de l’Ancien-Courrier. In the evening, independent shops light up their windows and terraces liven the pale stone. An ideal setting for a shared stroll.
Peyrou and the Arc de Triomphe
To the west, the Peyrou Promenade opens onto a wide terrace, where the Arc de Triomphe of Louis XIV watches over the king’s equestrian statue. The Saint-Clément aqueduct draws a magnificent perspective to the horizon. Locals come here to picnic at day’s end. On Lyad, members from Montpellier share their favourite lanes; it is up to you to find someone to wander them with.
